Taking Math Outside
Learn practical strategies for teaching math outdoors in this engaging virtual workshop! Discover how to use schoolyards, parks, and other outdoor spaces to teach and reinforce key math concepts while connecting learning to the Manitoba mathematics curriculum. Using natural materials, math tools, and inexpensive DIY resources, participants will explore activities that support number sense, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, and more. Designed for educators working with students in grades K–5, this session will provide ideas you can immediately adapt for your own classroom or learning environment.

Dr. Rachel Tidd

Dr. Rachel Tidd is passionate about using outdoor and place-based learning to enrich mathematics education. She is the author of Wild Learning: Practical Ideas for Bringing Teaching Outdoors and the creator of the Wild Math® curricular resources.
Rachel is a former elementary and special education teacher and holds a doctorate in Sustainability Education from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point and a master’s degree in Elementary and Special Education from Bank Street College of Education.
Her research focuses on outdoor, place-based, and interdisciplinary learning. In 2025, she conducted a study in seven upper-elementary classrooms across three Canadian provinces, exploring how outdoor and local learning experiences can support student engagement and meaningful learning.
